most / most of, all / all of 等量詞用法差別與單複數

量詞後面有沒有of：泛稱或是指定

在『輕鬆分辨a，the的用法』一文中提到過一個觀念：在英文寫作中，隨便一個用a，指定一個或一群用the，複數可數名詞或不可數名詞代表泛稱。這個觀念也就是這一類量詞後面有跟沒有of 在意義上的差別。

all / most / some / many / much / a little / a few 後面直接接名詞，代表泛稱，沒有指定任何一組人或物 all / most / some / many / much / a little / a few 後面先接of，再接the / 所有格 / 受格 / that / those等字，再接名詞，代表指定一組特定的人或物 – 這特定的ㄧ群人或物數量可以很多，也可以很少 most / most of

首先，我們先以大部分的人常犯錯的most來解說這觀念。most後面直接加上複數名詞或不可數名詞，代表泛稱，沒有特定的族群，語意就是大部分的…，例如：most people大部分的人，讀者在看到時這個片語時，腦中不會有特定族群出現，也因為這個用法是泛稱，所以數量上應該很大，即使作者使用的是誇飾法，畢竟全球有幾十億人口。most food waste，也是如此，泛稱大部分的食物廢棄物（浪費的食物），不是台灣的，不是特指美國的食物浪費。

而most of後面不能直接接名詞，要先接帶有指定意味的字，再接名詞，意思為在指定的一群中的大部分而這指定的一群的數量可大可小，所以most of my classmates可能只有20人ㄤ; most of the people in the factory可能數量有幾百或幾千人，要看工廠的規模。這些帶有指定意味的字有：

代名詞所有格如his, her, my, our, their, its, your 受格it, you, them, us 指示代名詞that, this, these, those

例如：most of the fresh water on Earth 指定地球上大部分的淡水，most of the students in our school指定我們學校裡的大部分的學生

還有，請注意：因為most後面可以接複數可數名詞，或單數不可數名詞，如果當主詞的話，後面的動詞是使用單數還是複數，要透過most後面的名詞來判斷：接複數名詞，動詞就是複數，接單數名詞，動詞就是單數。同樣的情況還有some一些，不管是some+名詞，還是some of + the +名詞，當這片語當主詞時，動詞的單複數要看名詞是否為可數名詞 (後面有沒有+s) 而定。

Most people have at least a smart phone.大部分的人，注意後面名詞是複數，所以動詞是複數 I like most fruits.這裡fruit加s代表種類，泛稱大部分的水果種類 In most books for children, there is a happy ending.大部分的童書 Most tap water is not drinkable.注意most後面名詞是不可數，所以動詞用的單數 – 以上都是most後面直接接名詞，是泛稱的概念 His mother gave him $10000 last week, and he spent most of it on clothes.of後面用受格it來代替前面所提到的10000元（指定） Most of her classmates are good at English.在of後面用所有格her來指定ㄧ群特定的人，語意為 – 她大部分的同班同學。因為classmates是複數，所以動詞用複數 We have raised a lot of money. Most of the money will go to food banks.在of後面用the money來指定前面所提到的募得的款項。因為money不可數，所以動詞用單數 Most of those foreign students are from the United States.在of後面用those來指定一群特定的外國學生 – 那些外國學生大部分是美國人– 以上都是most of ＋指定一群人或物的例句 Some birds can’t fly.有些鳥不能飛（作者沒有指定任何一群鳥） Some of his birds can’t fly because he has got their wings clipped. 在這劇中，不會飛的鳥是用his來指定的一群鳥 There is some pet food in the bowl.碗中有些寵物食物，food不可數，用單數動詞is例句9、10跟11是some的用法解析 all / all of the … / all the …

all跟all of 的用法分別其實跟most / most of是一樣的，all …是泛稱全體，而all of the …指定ㄧ群人或物中的全部。只是，在all of the … / all of his（所有格）…/ all of those…的時候，of常被省略，只剩下all the… / all his …/ all those…

All insects have six legs.泛稱所有的昆蟲（有六隻腳的那種） John thinks all girls are odd.泛稱所有的女孩，沒有指定任何一群 I bought some chocolate last night. Where has all the chocolate gone?這裡原本是all of the chocolate指定前面所提到的昨晚買的巧克力，在此，省略成為all the chocolate。因為chocolate不可數，所以用單數動詞 All my friends have a smart phone.原本應該是all of my friends（用所有格指定一群人），但是，省略of, 剩all my friends All these soldiers are going to war.同樣，用all of these soldiers指定一群士兵（這些士兵全部），of被省略，留下all these soldiers All of us did not do well on the math test.我們全部（指定一群），這裡不能省略of many / many of; a few / a few of ; much / much of; a little/ a little of

many, a few, much, a little, 還有one, two, three…等數詞，這些字的用法也跟most / most of一樣：後面直接接名詞代表泛稱; 後面有of，則要先接指定的用字像是the, his（所有格），these（指示形容詞）等字，再加上名詞，表示指定一群人或物。

不過，這些量詞有限定後面要接可數或不可數名詞，我們也要從這些量詞來判斷動詞的單複數：

many /a few / two / three…+複數可數名詞 – 使用複數動詞 many of / a few of / two of ＋the (所有格、受格、those、these ) + 複數可數名詞 – 使用複數動詞 one ＋單數可數名詞 – 使用單數動詞 one of + the (所有格、受格、those、these ) + 複數可數名詞 – 使用單數動詞 much / a little +不可數名詞 – 使用單數動詞 much of / a little of + the (所有格、受格、that、this ) + 單數可數名詞 – 使用單數動詞

以下舉幾個例句說明:

One boy is walking on the street.有一個男孩正走在路上– 這句話中，作者沒有指定哪個男孩，讀者也不會知道是哪個男孩 Can you see some boys over there? One of those boys is John’s brother.這句話中，作者用those boys指定了是前面所提到的那些男孩之一 Many people enjoy pop music.很多人，沒有指定任何一群 Many of the books will be sent to another library.這些書中有很多會寄到另外一個圖書館（指定一群書） A little paint goes a long way.ㄧ點點顏料就可以用很久（沒有指定任何顏料） There was some juice left in the bottle. He tasted a little of it. 在of後面用代名詞受格it指定前面所提到的juice I bought a few pants.幾件長褲，沒有指定 A few of the paints I bought in the flea market are brand new.在of後面用the來指定一群人或物
